San Francisco Chiropractor Offers Fibromyalgia Relief
Living with fibromyalgia is a challenge. Patients are assailed by symptoms ranging from pain throughout the body to fatigue, sleep problems, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, depression—even anxiety.
The medical community isn’t sure what causes fibromyalgia. And there is no cure.
But recent research from Egypt demonstrates that chiropractic care can be an effective treatment strategy for fibromyalgia. The study, published this year in Rheumatology International, included 120 people from 40 to 65 who had suffered from severe fibromyalgia for four years or more. Each person also had limited movement in their cervical spine, or the neck area. This is typically related to a spinal misalignment, or a vertebrae that has shifted out of position. This is a common trait among fibromyalgia sufferers.
Participants in the study were treated to 12 weeks of therapy, including education about fibromyalgia and available treatment options, cognitive behavioral therapy (i.e., discussion about pain management and positive reinforcement about actions aimed at relieving symptoms) plus an exercise program.
Half of the individuals were randomly assigned to receive upper cervical chiropractic adjustments three times a week for the first month and once a week for the remaining eight weeks.
At the beginning of the study, after 12 weeks, and one later, each participant completed questionnaires to determine what effect, if any, the chiropractic care had on easing fibromyalgia symptoms and reducing its impact on lifestyle.
The individuals who participated in the cervical chiropractic care group showed more improvement and better results than the control group, leading the researchers to conclude, “The addition of the upper cervical manipulative therapy to a multimodal program is beneficial in treating patients with FMS.”
Chiropractors are experts at treating spinal misalignments, which can compress or pinch the nerves in the spinal cord, interfering with the messages being relayed from the organs and tissues to the brain. As a result, your body fails to function at its peak.
Chiropractors trained in Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) can help relieve fibromyalgia symptoms by eliminating the source of the pain, fatigue, and depression. They do so by using techniques such as adjustments, traction, and exercises to correct the shape of the spine back to its normal curvature.
CBP is one of the most researched and most results-oriented chiropractic techniques, but only a handful of chiropractors in San Francisco are trained in the discipline. Among them are Drs. Scott Levin, Jason Miller and Corey Todhunter of PostureWorks in San Francisco’s Financial District. They have helped thousands of San Francisco Bay Area residents regain their health and vitality through chiropractic.
